How to Play Poker

Poker is a card game in which players independently try to form the highest-ranking hand of cards. The aim is to win the pot – all of the chips that have been bet during the hand. The game is traditionally played with five players but can be played with more or less.

Each player places his or her bets (either call or raise) in front of him or her and the dealer adds them to the pot. Players can also fold (sliding their cards away face-down) at any time in a hand.

Once betting has been completed, three more cards are dealt in the centre of the table. These are known as the community cards and can be used by all players. The player with the highest 5-card poker hand wins the pot.

New players tend to think about their own cards rather than the cards of their opponents. This can lead to mistakes. Instead, a good player will think about an opponent’s ranges and make moves based on that.

A good poker read is a key to winning. This doesn’t mean looking for subtle physical poker tells like scratching your nose or playing nervously with your chips – though this can help. It’s more about noticing patterns in your opponents’ actions and betting behavior. This helps you figure out what kind of hands they are likely to have and how much they might be able to raise in certain situations.
